Buy a powder lightener, such Clairol BW2, available at beauty supply stores such as Sally Beauty Supply. Mix equal parts powder lightener with 20 VOLUME developer (for blended in blonde streaks); if you want really light blonde streaks, use 30 VOLUME developer. Pull hairs through a plastic highlighting cap (the one with the little holes in it). Remember to mostly, if not entirely, pull hairs only from the top of your head (the crown). Apply highlighting mixture to the hairs that were pulled out, and leave on until you see the desired lightness (30-60 minutes). Wash everything off, and you're done.

If later you don't want the blonde streaks as light, or you want them warmer, you can apply a toner. You can apply the toner to all of your hair, which will make it easy for you; the deeper red color will not be affected because it is darker, and you will ask the sales person to recommend a pale toner for you in the shade that you request. I have red hair and I have alot of trouble getting my hair to take on blond. I tried the higlighting kits before and didnt get a "noticeable" highlight. I now use a gel called Lightening Gel and it is sorta like Sun In but you dont have to heat it or expose it to sun for it to work. I apply it all over but my 12 yr old girl has made chunky highlights in her hair with it.

All you do is get lemon juice and mix it in with your shampoo, and wash it for one week. But since you want highlights, just dip dip strands of your hair in the lemon/shampoo and wash just what you want.

Yes, you have to pull the color from your hair before you can turn it a color like purple...otherwise it's just gonna turn something between purple and red..that's one benefit blonds have over us :)

I ususally color my own hair. but speaking from lots and lots of experience......it's not a good thing to play around with red. unless you are going for a much darker color, I would goto a beauty salon and let a professional do it for you. depending on the condition of your hair it "should" be okay to go ahead and color again, although your hair will sustain some chemical damage. it's just hard to bounce around to different colors from red. it bleeds over into the new color. let a pro handle it for you.

i did that a couple of times and i had to dye it black. i liked black though it goes with my skin tone. you should definitely not bleach it it will ruin the color even more trust me I've been dyeing my hair since i was 14. You should wash it with dish-washing soap that has lemon concentrate on it if it has not been over a day since you dyed it. If it has been longer you should try to dye a shade darker than your natural shade in non permanent hair dye( natural instincts is the best). Good luck and I hope you get the color you want !

Baking soda is okay but it is more like a clarifing shampoo. Dawn dishwashing soap is more likely to strip some of the color. Remember, red is the hardest color to remove from your hair. When you are ready to recolor you need to use a color that has an "ash" base to it. No warm color. I know it sounds funny but to cancel out the red in your hair you need to put green back into it ie. I would either go with baking soda for permenate or non permenate dye, waiting for non permenate, depending on how long the color is supposed to stay it could come out in anywhere along the lines of 8 washes to 3 months. I don't like people who have red hair, is there a bible verse I could use to justify this?

I will tell you a story: I have a sister who has red hair, and this sister created so much problems for me during my school years. She would stir up trouble by telling the bigger bully boys that her brother was going to sort them out. I was only a weed of a guy, but was as swift as a deer. So whenever I was in a situation to sort these bully boys out, I always won the battle by running away, for no one could catch me:-). The School soon leaned that they had an amazing runner, and I was enlisted in there sports team...well I could not win any races, for no one was chasing after me...what a laugh.

So why am I telling you all this, well I will tell you a secret, I also disliked people with red hair..why.. because of my trouble maker sister.

I never wanted anything to do with red haired people, funny that, but when my last child was born, lo and behold a red haired son....how was this possible???....but he turned out to be the most delightful chap and I absolutely love him.

There is no justification for disliking anybody, maybe you need to think where did this dislike crept in...maybe my short story will help you:-)

I ususally color my own hair. but speaking from lots and lots of experience......it's not a good thing to play around with red. unless you are going for a much darker color, I would goto a beauty salon and let a professional do it for you. depending on the condition of your hair it "should" be okay to go ahead and color again, although your hair will sustain some chemical damage. it's just hard to bounce around to different colors from red. it bleeds over into the new color. let a pro handle it for you.

Now, first you must know that keeping red hair is very hard to do. It fades very quickly and needs to be touched up a lot also. After a few shampoos it will start to fade and within a few days to a week, it should be lighter. I don't suggest washing your hair with any other product that isn't shampoo or conditioner. You can never be too sure of what it may do to your hair. Everyone is different so I would stick to shampoo and conditioner only.

As a one time cosmotologist: Wash your hair several times with Prell Shampoo. It is called a stripping shampoo and will lighten the hair color a bit. You may also want to use conditioner after several washings. Good Luck!

It should be ok - my mom always does hers wrong and has to fix it - however she generally gets someone experienced to fix it or help her choose her colour- because keep in mind that since your hair is a different colour than originally you probably have to use a different colour scale to get your desired results

I dyed my hair a light brown, and it went two toned, so a few days later I went dark dark brown, and it didn't fry my hair or go some funky color. hey gin, u shud use a bleach based dye i have friend who had the same prob so we went out and bought bleach based dye was bit more expensive but worked and lasted a lot longer than 3weeks, the trick is to apply loads of it and leave it on for the max amount of time b careful tho as sum of them can irritate the scalp so best to do a little tester first.

The dye that I use, is one that is supposed to minimize red/orange tones and it does when I first dye it. But after the 6-8 weeks, it starts looking red and I HATE the red in my hair. Use a better (more expensive) hair dye, there are some around that actually do speciallise for hair that fades like yours does. Take a look in superdrug and whatever the price is of the one you get use a dearer one as it will last longer, but if you cant find one that lasts as long, use a darker shade of the colour you want as when it does start to fade it will go the colour you originally dye it now, and you'll have to spend no more in buying fancy sun protecting stuff or expensive hair dyes that might not work so yeah just try a darker shade. The sun brings out these tones in your hair. Use a sun screen specially developed for your hair. You can find these products at Wal-mart or the salon.

Note: SPF products that have to be rinsed out such as shampoo and conditioners offer very little protection from the sun. Find a leave in product and wear a hat for ultimate protection.

OK, first, if you have well water there is not much you can do. The iron count in the water is what is coloring your hair. If you are naturally brown, you are pulling out the the natural red. In that case you could go to a salon and have a seal put in your hair but that will cost from $15-$20 depending where you live. If you have lighter hair try putting a little more ash tones in the color. Store bought or box colors as they are known in the salons are not of the same strength as the professional colors you will get at a salon. If it were that easy beauticians would not have to go to 1500 hours of training and be required to be licensed. I hope this helps. Good question though, I give you a star.

I would try John Freda's radiant red collection. It workes for natural or color treated red hair. They have a whole line of Conditioners, shampoos, glazes, and color protectors. I would definetly try that. It is salon quality products but you could find it at your local drug store!

Coming from experience, first don't wash it every day. Wash it two - three times a week if you can. Also try a shampoo with red color in it - Aveda makes great ones or John Freida. Third, get a conditioner for colored hair. Pantene works for me or Loreal.
