Why do many Irish people have red hair?

High levels of pheomelanin (a red melanin). There's a tiny mutation that arose in that area and a couple of others worldwide that causes the pheomelanin levels in hair to be very high. No harm done though, just a pigment.

Something I have noticed, however, is that the Irish redheads in my family have all had acne and skin issues. I wonder if that tiny mutation has something to do with that. All of mine is eumelanin (the brown melanin) because of my Native father.
